Not likely. However, there have been rumours lately that Microsoft is going to release a portable media player. In my opinion, they do not have the marketing abilities to sqaush the iPod.
As Leo Laporte mentioned on his KFI Podcast, no company stays on top forever. This may be true for Apple, but I don’t think that Microsoft is going to lead to their demise. Microsoft has never made anything trendy. It has never been “cool” to own Windows. Apple has managed to successfully market a product to 95% of the market. This isn’t going to happen for Microsoft.
The question is, who is going to be the demise of Apple?

Well iPod may have 95% of the Portable Music Market but MS has about that of the Computer market and they make alot more from that.
Thats the important fact here, as uncool MS may be, it is more popular and you have to admit a HUGELY possibly the most successful company we have ever seen.
What about Enron?
Microsoft could very well crush apple in the portable player market. Does anybody know what makes the iPod so popular? I don’t think it’s the technology. It’s a trend, and all trends die. It may happen that somebody buys this Microsoft device, and says to his friends “Hey, this is way cooler than the iPod…” Now, all of his friends are buying it and it continues in this fashion. On the other hand, it may not.
Look at the Wii, Nintendo is often considered to be the underdog when it comes to the gaming market, but everybody is hyped about the Wii. All MS needs to do is create a product with innovative features, but not make it fail like Sony’s PSP.

The Xbox counts. I’d like to see you sell over ten million of anything.
The XBOX is not “trendy”. If I bought an XBOX, I would not be considered a trend-whore. I don’t feel that Microsoft has the ability to dominate the market. Microsoft consists of a bunch of geeks. At least Apple has that “I’m a Mac” guy. I know that the iPod is not going to dominate the market forever, no company can.
So that brings me to my question? Who is going to take over? Google maybe?

Actually, you might. There’s no official “trend-whore” bureau that hands these things out, you know. The Xbox 360, in particular, is just as well designed as my Mac. For a while, having the console was an elite status symbol because of its difficulty to obtain.
A lot of people would consider plunking down $399US on a piece of electronics (admittedly without a killer app - it’s got some really good games, but clearly Halo 3 and Gears of War will be the reasons to own one) to be quite whorish.
